Kabare Coffee Growers Cooperative

Kabare Cooperative (CPCK) was established in October 22nd 2010 by an initiative of a group of 20 individuals including the current chairman of the board of directors Mr Jean Munyemale. CPCK was created to address several issues to improve the profitability of the coffee sector and eliminate obstacles towards the market, such as low prices, impediments of traders exporting to Rwanda; insufficient revenue to sustain house hold income; and, abandonment of coffee farms located in Kabamba, South Kivu, between National ParcKahuzi-Biega and lake Kivu. We have 2 washing stations, we work according to the GAP principles in order to respect the ecosystem and the environment and are working in cooperation with the Worldwide Conservation Society (WCS). In 2010, the cooperative started with 20 members, after a membership campaign was held in 2013, this number increased to 644. Currently, with the positive impact of our previous transactions, there are currently 2,261, workers at Kabare cooperative 441 of which are women. Currently the vision of the cooperative is to export 4 containers of specialty coffee by 2021 and 5 containers green coffee by 2023. CPCK is also interested in improving the agricultural service road, installing a shop for agricultural tools, investing in a dehulling machine for better cleaning of our coffee beans and to produce specialty coffee with a score above 89%.
